Yum Kippur - the Day of Atonement - is the
holiest day of the year for the Jews.
The total fast, no waters no food, starts this year on Friday at
sundown, and is completed on Saturday at sundown.
Id-Al-Adcha - the feast of the sacrifice -
is the most important feast of the year for the Muslims. During that time a pilgrimage to Mecca is
recommended. This feast is
celebrated this weekend as well.
When a Muslim holy feast clashes with a
Jewish holy fast in the same space and the same time, the people clash as well.
Many wars start with the hate filled explosions
during the fast/feast days.
Yet, neighbours try to stay calm and
within their own areas so as not to step on others cultural and religious toes.
We were asked to be peaceful; to pray especially
for Acco, Jerusalem, Haifa where peaceful co-existence is a matter of life and
death. If you believe, please pray for peace with us.
Willie and I will not be venturing too far
afield; we will be staying indoors or go for quiet short walks in our local neighborhood.
Personally, I
am hoping to find a local synagogue where I can listen to Kol-Nidray, the
traditional prayer singing of Yum Kippur.
276th Day of Praise -
I thank you God for teaching us to
co-exist recognizing our differences but respecting each other in spite of
them. I thank you God for a peaceful Yum
Kippur.
Resting this weekend,
Orith
