Savta's Buttons

My grandmother used to sew a lot.  She had a Singer machine, and her foot would rock its peddle up and down while her right hand turned the wheel as she stitched.

When I was sitting quietly with her in the afternoons, she used to give to me needles and thread and asked me to thread the needles; her eyes were slowly losing their sights and she could not find the needles' holes.  The needle with the white thread would be wrapped around the black spool and the needle with the black thread would be wrapped around the white.  When the colours stood out she found her threads.

I have very little left from her: Memories and some buttons.

I sorted the few buttons that I still possess; they are unique and antique.

I plan to use some of these antique buttons on knitted items for my granddaughters.  In my mind the buttons will thread the generations through time and space; a thread from my Savta to me and from me as a Savta to my little girls.

329th Day of Praise -
I thank You God for grandmothers' love, for the little items that remind us of them, and for connecting the generations in various unique ways.

Loving my little ones from far away,

Savta Orith
